Method

  • Advisories are fetched from the US State Department travel-advisory API and the gov.uk content API on every build. The SafeRoutes level is the highest level reported. Last fetch: 2 October 2026 (live).
  • Hubs are ranked by number of direct destinations in the OpenFlights route graph (last refreshed in this repo 21 September 2026).
  • Corridors: pairs of the ~150 busiest hubs in Level 1–2 countries, at least 2,500 km apart, whose great-circle line crosses at least 100 km of Level 4 countries. Corridors already discussed on this site (e.g. Mumbai–London) are evaluated first.
  • Country crossings are sampled every ~25 km along the great circle against country-boundary polygons.
  • Detours: shortest path on a 1° latitude/longitude grid where Level 4 (“Do not travel”) countries are blocked, divided by the unblocked grid path and multiplied by the great-circle distance. Hours added = extra km ÷ 850 km/h. These are estimates, not airline flight plans.
  • Limitations: advisory levels describe ground-travel risk, not airspace status; airlines follow NOTAMs and their own regulator's conflict-zone guidance and may fly closer to or further from a border than this model.
