The Price of the Detour: What Flying Around Conflict Zones Costs in Time, Fuel, and Fares
Every time a block of airspace closes - whether over Ukraine, the Gulf, or anywhere else - the flights that used to cross it do not simply vanish. They bend. Aircraft swing hundreds or thousands of kilometers around the closed zone, and every one of those extra kilometers has a price: more time in the air, more fuel burned, more emissions released, and ultimately more pressure on fares and schedules.
That price is mostly invisible to passengers. Your ticket does not itemize 'conflict-zone detour surcharge,' and your airline will rarely explain why a route that took nine hours a few years ago now takes thirteen. But researchers have started to measure the cost of flying the long way round, and the numbers are larger than most travelers assume. This post walks through the best available data on what conflict-zone avoidance actually costs - and what it means for how you plan and book long-haul trips.
A World Map With Holes in It
The modern detour era began in February 2022. When Russia invaded Ukraine, Ukrainian airspace closed to civil traffic entirely - and it has stayed closed ever since. In the retaliatory exchange that followed, the EU, UK, US, Canada and others banned Russian carriers, and Russia closed its own enormous airspace to airlines from dozens of countries in return. At a stroke, the shortest paths between Europe and much of Asia - the great-circle routes over Siberia that aviation had relied on for decades - became unusable for most Western airlines.
Russia is the largest country on Earth, and its airspace sits directly between Europe and East Asia. There is no small way around it: affected flights now route south through the Caucasus, Central Asia and the Middle East, or in some cases far north over the Arctic and Alaska. Each closure on its own is manageable. Stacked together, they turn route planning into a maze.
The Headline Numbers: 13% More Fuel, 1% More Global CO2
The most rigorous public accounting of the detour bill so far comes from a study led by researchers at the University of Reading, published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment in early 2025. Using flight-tracking data and fuel-burn models that account for winds and aircraft type, the team compared the routes airlines actually flew in 2023 with the routes they would have flown had Russian and Ukrainian airspace been open.
The findings, for the roughly 1,100 flights per day affected by the closures, were striking:
- Rerouted flights burned about 13% more fuel on average than they would have on their pre-war routings.
- Flights between Europe and East Asia - the corridor hit hardest - used around 14.8% more fuel.
- Flights between North America and Asia used about 9.8% more.
- The detours added roughly 8.2 million tonnes of CO2 to aviation's output in 2023 - about a 1% increase in the industry's total global emissions, from this one geopolitical event alone.
Time: The Cost Passengers Actually See
Fuel percentages are abstract; hours are not. The clearest passenger-facing example is Finnair, whose entire long-haul strategy was built on Helsinki's position as the shortest European gateway to Asia over Siberia. Before 2022, Helsinki to Tokyo took roughly nine and a half hours. Avoiding Russian airspace, the same journey now takes around thirteen - the airline itself describes the shift as going 'from a shortcut to a detour.' Similar penalties, typically between one and four extra hours, apply across Europe-to-Asia schedules operated by carriers that cannot overfly Russia.
Extra hours cascade through the system in ways that go beyond a longer sit in seat 34K. Longer sectors push crews toward duty-time limits, sometimes requiring augmented crews or schedule changes. Arrival times drift into night-curfew windows at some airports. Connection banks built around the old timings stop lining up, and a modest delay on a stretched route is more likely to snap a tight onward connection. When newer closures - like those over the Gulf in mid-2026 - force traffic off the southern detour routes as well, the remaining corridors become congested, and delays multiply.
Fuel, Weight, and the Detour Spiral
Fuel is one of the largest single costs of running an airline - commonly somewhere between a quarter and a third of operating expenses, depending on prices. A double-digit percentage increase in fuel burn on a route is therefore not a rounding error; it attacks the economics of the flight directly.
The physics make it worse. Flying farther requires carrying more fuel, and fuel is heavy - so the aircraft burns extra fuel simply to carry the extra fuel. On the longest detour routings this spiral eats into payload: airlines may have to cap passenger numbers or, more often, cut belly cargo, which is a significant revenue stream on many long-haul flights. A route can slide from profitable to marginal without a single fare changing, purely because the line on the map got longer.
When the Detour Kills the Route Entirely
Sometimes the arithmetic stops working altogether. In 2024, British Airways suspended its London-Beijing service and Virgin Atlantic withdrew from London-Shanghai, with the longer routings around Russia - and the costs that come with them - central to both decisions. Other European and North American carriers have trimmed East Asian frequencies for similar reasons. The detour cost, in other words, is not always paid as a higher fare on an existing flight; sometimes it is paid as a flight that no longer exists, leaving travelers with fewer nonstop options and more one-stop itineraries through Gulf, Turkish or Central Asian hubs.
This is also where the playing field tilts. Airlines that are still permitted to use Russian airspace - notably Chinese carriers, among others - can fly the old, shorter routes between Europe and Asia. That translates into shorter block times and lower fuel costs on head-to-head city pairs, a structural advantage that has shifted traffic on the corridor. Whatever view one takes of the politics, the practical effect for travelers is that timetables between the same two cities can differ by hours depending on which airline's flag is on the tail.
What This Means for Your Next Booking
- Compare durations, not just prices. On Europe-Asia and North America-Asia trips, scheduled times for the same city pair can differ by several hours between carriers, largely because of who can overfly what.
- Expect the detour to show up as a connection. Where nonstops have been cut, the realistic option is often a one-stop via a Gulf, Istanbul or Central Asian hub - budget time and energy accordingly.
- Build slack into connections on rerouted corridors. Stretched routes have less schedule padding to absorb disruption, so a 60-minute connection that once felt safe may no longer be.

But the detours are not free. The best current research puts the fuel penalty at around 13% on affected flights, the emissions cost at millions of tonnes of CO2 a year, and the passenger cost at anywhere from one to four extra hours - when the route survives at all.
None of this argues for flying closer to danger; the detour is emphatically worth it. It argues for planning with open eyes. The distance between two cities on a globe is fixed, but the distance your aircraft actually flies is a moving, political number.
