Iran Airspace Closure: September 2026 Status Update

If you are searching for the Iran airspace closure status in September 2026, here is the short answer: Iranian airspace is still only partially usable, very few international airlines are flying through it, and the situation deteriorated again in the first week of September. The eastern portion of the Tehran FIR (OIIX) has been available for some overflights, while the western portion remains effectively off-limits — and renewed strikes in early September have pushed the risk of short-notice closures right back up.

This is our September update to a story we have been tracking for months. It covers what changed since August, what European regulators are currently advising, how airlines are actually routing, and what it all means if you have a flight booked between Europe and Asia this month.

Is Iran's Airspace Open or Closed in September 2026?

Neither fully open nor fully closed — which is exactly why the question keeps trending. Earlier in the summer, Iran partially reopened the eastern part of the Tehran FIR to international overflights, and a limited number of operators began using it again. The western part of the FIR, closest to the areas hit in strikes, has remained closed to most traffic.

In practice, though, 'partially open' matters less than what airlines actually do. Risk assessments, insurance, and regulator advisories mean most international carriers continue to treat all of Iranian airspace as a no-go, exactly as they have since the escalation began. The gap between 'legally available' and 'actually used' airspace is one of the defining features of this conflict.

What Changed in Early September 2026

The first week of September brought the sharpest escalation since mid-summer. The United States launched a new round of strikes on Iran around September 2, and Iran responded with missile and drone attacks against US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait and Iraq, with strikes also reported affecting Iraqi Kurdistan.

For aviation, the immediate effect was familiar: temporary airport closures and ground stops around the Gulf, flights cancelled or rerouted at short notice, and a renewed risk that any given overflight corridor can shut with minutes of warning. This is the same pattern we described in our piece on why airspace closes without warning — and it is why the modest reopening progress made over the summer should be treated as fragile.

What EASA Currently Advises

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency does not close foreign airspace — it publishes Conflict Zone Information Bulletins that airlines treat as strong guidance. As of this writing, EASA has five high-risk bulletins in force covering Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, and the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman region, all valid until 30 September 2026 unless reviewed earlier.

The advice for Iran and Iraq remains the strictest: avoid at all flight levels. Jordan and the Gulf bulletins have softened to risk-awareness language in recent revisions, and Lebanon remains avoided except for approaches to Beirut over the Mediterranean. The 30 September validity date is a review point, not an expiry — bulletins have been rolled forward repeatedly, and the early-September escalation makes another extension the likeliest outcome.

How Flights Are Actually Routing This Month

With Iranian and Iraqi airspace avoided, the two main detours remain the same ones airlines have used all year:

• The southern corridor: down over Egypt and Saudi Arabia, then east across the Arabian Sea — the workhorse route for Europe–Asia traffic, at the cost of extra flight time and fuel.
• The northern corridor: through the Caucasus and across Central Asia, including routes touching Afghan airspace corridors that have reopened to overflights in recent years.
• A trickle of eastern-OIIX overflights: a small number of regional operators using the reopened eastern portion of the Tehran FIR, which most international carriers still decline.

What This Means for Your Trip

Longer flight times on Europe–Asia routes are still the norm rather than the exception, and Gulf hub connections remain exposed to short-notice disruption when strikes flare, as they did in early September. Most airports in the wider region are open and most flights operate, but schedule padding, late reroutes, and occasional cancellations continue.

If you are flying this month: check your flight's status in the 24 hours before departure, keep connections generous, and remember that a reroute around Iran is a safety measure working as intended, not a reason to worry. For the bigger picture, see our explainer on how long the Middle East airspace restrictions might last and our guide to checking whether your route avoids conflict zones.

The Bottom Line

September 2026 opens with Iran's airspace in the same uneasy state it has been in for months, minus some of the summer's cautious optimism. The eastern Tehran FIR is technically available; the western half is not; and almost nobody international is flying through either. With EASA's advisories running to 30 September and fresh strikes in the first week of the month, the closure is best understood as ongoing — and any real reopening will need a calm that, for now, keeps getting interrupted.
