Iran's airspace status has shifted repeatedly through the year, and many operators avoid it regardless of formal status. The northern corridor: Turkey, the Caucasus and Central Asia
The workhorse alternative for Europe-Asia traffic runs north of the trouble entirely: across Turkey, then either over the Caucasus (Georgia and Azerbaijan) and the Caspian Sea, or further north via Kazakhstan and other Central Asian states, before descending toward South and East Asia.
Airlines choose the northern corridor when they want maximum distance from the conflict zone with reasonably direct routing to Asia. - Longer block times. Detours around Iranian, Gulf or Iraqi airspace commonly add anywhere from thirty minutes to a few hours depending on the city pair.
- Unexpected fuel stops. Ultra-long flights pushed onto longer tracks sometimes pick up a technical stop the schedule never used to have.
- Different overflight countries. If seeing a particular country on the flight map worries you, remember the corridor exists precisely to keep the flight in lower-risk airspace.
- Schedule volatility. Tactical routing, flow control and GPS interference in parts of the region mean same-day changes are more common than usual.
